Welcome back to school and I hope you had a lovely break over the holidays. It was lovely to see all the children again and hear about their holidays and, of course, Santa.
We launched into revising our Jolly Phonics sounds and back to practicing how to blend. We also started looking at our first "word family." These are words that rhyme and this week we focused on the "at" family. The children loved making up silly sentences using these words, "The fat cat had a hat." One of my favourite websites is www.starfall.com We are using level 2 now in school but level 1 is still a great revision for our letter sounds. In level 2 we can have a look at the word families and play little games and read short stories using short, simple words. Have a look at this youtube clip showing the at word family.

We had a lot of fun this week learning about how important it is to wash our hands properly. We did a little experiment in class, pretending that glitter were the germs we sneezed/coughed out and then we saw how fast and how far the glitter spread around the classroom, from just 4 children starting wtih glitter.
Alison and Tyler helped us to demonstrate how important washing your hands using soap and water is. Tyler used just water and Alison used soap also. We were so surprised at how little glitter was left on Alison's hands compared to Tyler's.
Saoirse gave the class a lovely treat when she read a book for us.
We were also very excited to be writing the numbers 1 and 2 and next week we will finally begin writing our letters! :)
Here are a few photos of the children in action this week. We have started the gymnastics strand in PE and were practicing our log rolls and balancing and travelling across the benches. Look at all the creative ways the children found.
